Bats Stay Hot, Worcester Wins Fourth Straight

Worcester Bravehearts News Release

WORCESTER, Mass. - After three consecutive gritty wins, the Worcester Bravehearts (15- 5) added a fourth rather easily with the help of their hot hitting and solid starting pitching against the Nashua Silver Knights (14-7). The top two teams battled it out at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, where the Bravehearts ended up with the victory, 12-5.

Worcester's starting pitcher Brady Furdon (Wheaton/Natick, MA) saw his college teammate Mike Bruemmel (Wheaton/Bridgewater, MA) get hurt with the long ball in last night's come from behind win against Torrington. Furdon (3-1) made it easier on himself and his teammates today, holding the Nashua batters to just two runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. He also walked two and struck out two batters in his league-high third win this summer.

Nashua's starter Taylor Doyle (Plymouth State/Peterborough, NH) wasn't as lucky. Doyle (1-1) was hit early and often, as the Bravehearts bats jumped all over him for six runs on nine hits in just 3 2/3 innings pitched. He also struck out two and walked two in his first loss this summer.

The offensive party kicked off in the second inning with four runs for Worcester, including a two-run double from Dante Ricciardi (St. Petersburg/West Boylston, MA), giving the Bravehearts the 4-0 lead. Ricciardi had three hits and three RBIs on the day for the Bravehearts.

Worcester scored one run in each of the next three innings, but a home run from Nashua's Ryan Sullivan (Southern New Hampshire/Boston, MA) trimmed the lead to 7-2 in the sixth. That was, until the Bravehearts bats woke up again in the bottom half of the innings. Worcester scored five more times, including a three-run triple from outfielder Ryan Ward (Bryant/Millbury, MA) to give the home team a 12-2 lead. That would be plenty for the Bravehearts in their league best 15th win this summer.

Nashua tallied on three late runs in the ninth, but that's as close as it would get, as Pat McGowan (Holy Cross/Wellesley, MA) closed out a 12-5 victory for Worcester. Mike Coggeshall (Assumption/Shrewsbury, MA) went 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI, extending his hit streak to 14 games, and increasing his league high batting average to .441 in the win.
