Victoria Generals News Release

Tonight at Riverside Stadium was Victoria Advocate Subscribers Night present by the Victoria Advocate. Fans packed the stadium tonight, supporting the Generals as they took on the Baton Rouge Rougarou in the second game of a two-game series.

The Generals were looking to keep their bats hot and sweep the Rougarou in this two-game series coming into tonight's game. While starting pitcher Travis Phelps was able to strike out three batters in the first, the Rougarou struck first getting one run across. The Generals responded, as leadoff batter Samuel Benjamin smacked a double into right field, giving the home team a runner in scoring position. The Generals were able to capitalize as Benjamin was able to steal third and then score the first run of the night thanks to a ground ball from Malachi Lott.

The bats stayed hot in the second for the Generals as Reed Spenrath led off the inning with a double and eventually came around and scored the second run of the night following a ground ball from Brandon Galindo. Defense and pitching prevailed for both teams in the third inning as while both teams got runners on base, no runs were scored.

The Rougarou were able to bring home another run in the top of the fourth, tying the game at two. The Generals bounced back in the bottom of the fourth, as Spenrath hit his second leadoff double of the game and was brought home on a Galindo single to give the Generals the lead again. With the bases loaded, Benjamin drew a walk, giving the Generals their second run of the inning and a 4-2 lead heading into the fifth.

Both teams went down in order in the fifth inning as the score remained the same. The Rougarou put runners on the bases in the top of the sixth, but a good relief performance from Chris Kean limited the damage as he struck out two batters and only allowed one run to come across.

The Generals led 4-3 heading into the seventh, and Kean looked to preserve that lead as he continued to dominate in relief, striking out two batters and allowing no baserunners in the top of the inning. The Generals offense came back to life in the bottom of the seventh, as Chase Sanguinetti blasted a no-doubt two RBI home run well over the right field wall. The offense continued as Galindo hit a blistering line drive over the head of the Rougarou center fielder, giving him an RBI triple and extending the Generals lead to four runs heading into the eighth.

The Rougarou rallied in the eighth, scoring two runs and making it a 7-5 ballgame. The Generals wasted no time answering back, as the leadoff man Benjamin blasted the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for a solo home run, increasing the Generals lead to 3. The rally continued as the Generals loaded the bases for Cameron Nickens, who was able to cash in as he put a ground ball in play which brought home a run. Galindo followed this up with a two RBI single, giving him 5 total RBIs for the night.

With one frame of play remaining, the Generals led 11-5 and looked to close out the game. Michael Barta was on the mound for his second inning of work, and he closed out the game for the generals allowing no runs in the top of the ninth. This victory secured the series sweep for the Generals and their third win in a row

The Generals will be back in action tomorrow night for game four of a four game home stand as they take on the Seguin River Monsters on Bark at the Park night present by Northside Ranch, Pet, and Garden Center. Any fans who bring their dog to the park are admitted for free! First pitch will be thrown at 7:05 p.m.
