The General's Offensive Surge Pushes Them Past the Rougarou

July 9, 2022 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
Victoria Generals News Release

Tonight at Riverside Stadium was free ticket night presented by Victory Auto Group. Riverside was packed with fans supporting the Generals as they took on the Baton Rouge Rougarou in the first game of a two-game series.

The Generals were coming into tonight's game with a ton of momentum as they won a nail-biter against the Bombers the night before due to an excellent performance from the pitching staff. They started hot as starting pitcher Colby Casey struck out the first three Rougarou batters in the top of the first. However, the Rougarou rallied in the bottom of the second to give them an early five run lead. The Rougarou looked to get more runs across in the third, but a good performance out of the bullpen from Seve Medrano and some good defense kept the score the same. The Generals were able to chip away at the deficit as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and brough home a run thanks to a hit by pitch from Chase Sanguinetti.

Medrano kept the Rougarou off the board in the top of the fourth and following that the Generals' bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning. An error got leadoff man Isiah Walker on base, with Brandon Galido and Angel Mendoza both getting walks, leading to the bases being loaded. Samuel Benjamin brought home the first run of the inning with an RBI single. The fourth inning rally continued as Malachi Lott hit a 2 RBI single, cutting the Rougarou lead to just two heading into the fifth inning. While the Rougarou were able to score a run in the top of the fifth, the Generals offensive onslaught continued. Walker led off the inning with a single and made his way to third thanks to a Galindo single. An error brought home walker, and Benjamin followed up the score with an RBI double, giving the Generals two runs in the inning and tying the ballgame.

Pitcher JJ Slack came in for relief in the top of the sixth and kept the Rougarou from scoring. The bottom of the sixth was more explosive offense as the Generals loaded the bases thanks to good plate vision and errors on the Rougarou's part. RBI singles from Galindo, Bengamin, and Chris Kean brought home three runs with Sean Curtis drawing a walk to bring home the fourth run of the inning, giving the Generals a four-run led heading into the seventh.

The Rougarou looked to answer back in the seventh as they loaded the bases, but pitcher Hunter Kloesel struck out both batters he faced out of the bullpen, keeping the visiting team off the board. The General's kept their foot on the gas in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases off three straight walks. Kean brough home a run as he drew another walk, and a wild pitch brough in the second run of the inning. Folling an error that brough home a run, Lott blasted an RBI double off the right field wall, capping off a four run seventh inning for the generals as they led by eight heading in the eighth.

Kloesel continued his great relief performance with some help from his defense, as the Generals kept the Rougarou off the board in the eighth with an inning ending double play from Reed Spenrath. The Generals bats cooled off in the eighth, but it did not matter as Park Bigham came in and closed out the game, only allowing one run and securing a 14-7 victory for the Generals as they now improve the 3-1 in the second half of the TCL season.

The Generals will be back in action tomorrow night for game three of a four game home stand as they take on the Baton Rouge Rougarou on Victoria Advocate Subscriber's Night. First pitch will be thrown at 7:05 p.m.
