Joliet JackHammers News Release
JOLIET, IL - The JackHammers for the first time played host to the expansion Lake County Fielders Friday night at Silver Cross Field, which kicked off the 2010 home slate for Joliet. In the end the JackHammers would have just enough of what it would take in a back and forth battle to defeat the Fielders 7-5.
The game started out as a pitcher's duel between the Fielders' Jeff Long and the JackHammers' Ross Stout. Long would only allow one base runner through the first three innings until the JackHammers were able to capitalize on some timely hitting, started by a Brad Correll one out double. Ryan Basham knocked in both Correll and Nelson who had reached on a walk to give Joliet a 2-0 lead, which would hold up until the top of the seventh.
With both starting pitchers out of the game the offenses came alive. Fielders were able to score 4 runs in their half of the seventh inning thanks to some shaky JackHammer defense and clutch hitting from Joey Gomes who drove in two runs with a double. The four run frame would give Lake County a 5-2 edge.
In the bottom of the seventh, the JackHammers were not to be out done however, when they scored four runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, thanks to a bases loaded double by Jonathan Wyatt which plated two. The JackHammers were able to expand the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning and that would be it for the scoring as JackHammer closer Drew Shetrone came in and closed the door in the Fielders faces going 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, recording two strikeouts.
With the win the Jackhammers improved to 4-4 on the season and Fielders fell to 3-6.
