Sevierville, Tenn. - Tennessee (15-6, 50-41) racked up a series high 12 hits against Huntsville (11-8, 51-36), and split the series with a 4-2 win Sunday at '80's Night at Smokies Park. Tennessee took the field in the baby blue road jerseys of the 1982 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals topped Milwaukee in seven games in the 1982 fall classic, while the Smokies gained a split against the Brewer's Double A affiliate on a rainy Sunday.
The Smokies took a 1-0 lead in the first when Papo Bolivar singled to drive in Caonabo Cosme, who reached on a three base error by Richard Paz, playing out of position in right field. Skip Schumaker added another run in the second when his two-out double drove home Kevan Burns. The Smokies increased the lead to three in the fifth when Bolivar singled home Cosme for his second RBI of the game.
The Stars closed the gap in the seventh when Chris Barnwell reached with a leadoff walk and scored on a RBI single by Brandon Gemoll. Noochie Varner then drove home Richard Paz with a groundout to the shortstop to make the score 3-2.
Juan Pena (4-3) started for the Smokies and was credited with the win as he went six innings while only allowing two hits and one run. Mike Lyons pitched a perfect ninth to gain his league-leading 25th save of the season.
The Smokies will host the Greenville Braves for the series opener Monday night at 7:15 at Smokies Park. The four game series will open with Chris Carpenter making a rehab start for Tennessee against Adam Wainright (5-7, 4.01).
