Bats Bombarded by Clippers 7-2

Louisville, KY - With their magic number to clinch the division down to three, the Louisville Bats opened up a short four-game homestand by dropping game one to the Columbus Clippers 7-2 tonight in front of 8,175 fans at Louisville Slugger Field. The Bats only accumulated four hits with Luis Bolivar going 2-for-4, including two triples. Bolivar's two triples tied a franchise record for most in a game.
Columbus started the scoring in the top of the first inning. With one out Josh Barfield, Jordan Brown, and Wes Hodges singled to load the bases. Tony Graffanino followed with a sacrifice fly to center. Lou Marson then lined a ball to left, but a nice defensive play by the Bats' Lew Ford stopped the rally, giving the Clippers a 1-0 lead.
The Bats did not waste any time leveling the score at one. Luis Bolivar got thing started with a triple to right. A batter later Todd Frazier ground to short, bringing home Bolivar.
In the top of the second inning Stephen Head led off with a single and Damaso Espino reached on a fielding error. Niuman Romero then bunted for a hit to load the bases for the second straight inning. Michael Brantley then smacked a bases-clearing double to right-center. Brantley ended the night 3-for-5 and stole his 42nd base of the season.
The Clippers played add-on in their half of the fifth inning. Barfield reached on a leadoff single and Brown put runners at first and second with a single of his own. Graffanino then ground towards third base but Bats' third baseman Juan Francisco committed his second error of the game, allowing both runners to score and pushing the Clipper lead to 6-1.
Louisville scratched a run across in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and a runner on first Chris Heisey doubled to put runners on second and third. Frazier then reached on an error to load the bases. Francisco did his part to atone for his errors by driving home Bolivar with a sacrifice fly to center, making the score 6-2.
Brown doubled to start the seventh for the Clippers and moved to third on a single by Hodges. Graffanino then walked to load the bases for the third time in the game. Head was able to drive home Brown on a sacrifice fly to right for the last run of the game..
Sam LeCure (9-7, 4.45) took the mound looking for his tenth win of the season but he took the loss throwing six innings. He allowed six runs, four earned, on nine hits, walked one, and struck out three. It marked the fourth time that LeCure has failed to win his tenth game.
Acquired in the trade that sent Cliff Lee to the Philadelphia Phillies, Carlos Carrasco (11-10, 4.64) worked seven innings to earn the win. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits, walked one, and struck out three.
The Bats and Clippers will meet in game two of their four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Come out to Louisville Slugger Field and enjoy the game as LHP Tom Cochran (4-6, 3.18 w/CAR-AA) gets the ball for Louisville and LHP Chuck Lofgren (5-9, 5.50) is on the mound for Columbus.
