Baseball America Names Harris Player of the Year
November 4, 2017 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
(November 3, York, Pa.) - Baseball America has selected York Revolution infielder/outfielder Alonzo Harris as its 2017 Independent Leagues Player of the Year, the magazine announced today.
The accolade from the nation's leading baseball resource is the latest in a long list of honors this year for the Revs leadoff batter, who was previously named a midseason Atlantic League All-Star, the Revolution's 2017 Team MVP, an Atlantic League Post-Season All-Star, and the 2017 Atlantic League Player of the Year.
Harris is the first Revolution player to be named Player of the Year by Baseball America.
Harris utilized his special combination of power and speed to spark a Revolution offense that was the league's most potent during its second-half title run, becoming just the sixth player in the 20-year history of the Atlantic League to join the 20-30 club (20-plus home runs, 30-plus stolen bases) and the first to do so in eight seasons.
"The Baseball America Indy Player of the Year Award puts the finishing touch on a great season for Alonzo," Revolution manager Mark Mason said. "Zo is one of the most impactful players I've ever had the privilege to coach. His rare combination of speed and power along with his defensive versatility gave us opportunities to adjust our lineup and strategy every night. I'm very happy for him. These honors are well deserved, and hopefully they will be a springboard for a Minor League spring training invitation with a Major League organization."
At the plate, Harris ranked fourth in the Atlantic League in batting (.315), tied for fourth in home runs (23), tied for second in hits (145), third in total bases (244), fifth in extra-base hits (52), and second in slugging (.530) while leading the league with 89 runs scored. The Revs' leadoff man also stole 31 bases in his 114 games played.
In addition to his league rankings, Harris' single-season totals rank him among the elite in Revs franchise history. His home run total ranks tied for fourth and was the most by a Revs batter since 2014, while Harris finished ninth in Revs history in hits, seventh in total bases, tied for seventh in extra-base hits, tied for fifth in slugging, fifth in runs, and tied for fifth in steals. He became the first Revs batter to lead the league in runs scored since 2011.
