Barton, Smith Assigned to Stampede from Blazers

BOISE, Idaho, January 6, 2013 - The Idaho Stampede have been assigned Will Barton and Nolan Smith from their hybrid single-affiliate team, Trail Blazers General Manager Neil Olshey announced today.
Barton and Smith are expected to play this weekend against the Texas Legends and Canton Charge in the team's games at the NBA D-League Showcase in Reno, Nev. The assignments are the 97th and 98th of the 2012-13 NBA and NBA D-League seasons and the second for Barton and first for Smith, who become two of the 47 individual players assigned this season.
Barton (6-5, 170, Memphis, b. 1/6/91) joins the Stampede as a rookie after he was selected 40th overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. Barton has played 28 games for Portland, averaging 2.9 points and 1.4 rebounds in 10.1 minutes per game. In two contests with the Stampede earlier this year, Barton averaged 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds.
Smith (6-2, 185, Duke, b. 7/25/88) was originally selected 21st overall in the 2011 NBA Draft after a four-year career at Duke. With the Blazers, Smith has played 62 games (4 starts) and averaged 3.4 points and 1.3 assists in 11.1 minutes per game. Smith was named a first team AP All-American and the ACC Player of the Year as a senior at Duke, while as a junior, was the starting shooting guard for the Blue Devils' national championship team. Went to three years of high school at national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy, where he played with future NBA stars Michael Beasley, Ty Lawson and Brandon Jennings. Smith was a McDonald's All-American as senior in 2007. Father Derek was a nine-year NBA veteran and NCAA champion with Louisville in 1980.
The Stampede play the Texas Legends tomorrow at 1:45 p.m. (MST) and the Canton Charge the next day at the same time. Both games can be seen on NBADLeague.com live and for free, as well as on NBA TV.
