Oshawa Generals News Release
Oshawa, Ontario - The Barrie Colts shot out to a 3-0 series lead in Oshawa on Sunday night; they beat the Generals 4-0 before a General Motors Centre crowd of 4,676. Penalty trouble caused the Generals to stumble, and Barrie capitalized with a power-play that went 3-for-5 on the evening. Oshawa created chances, outshooting Barrie, 35-25, but Colts' goaltender, Mathias Niederberger, was perfect, earning a shutout and the second star of the game.
The Generals matched Barrie's intensity in the first period, but a 5-on-3 Colts power play took the wind out of Oshawa's sails. Striking on the first Barrie shot of the game, Steven Beyers walked in and wired his 4th of the playoffs past Daniel Altshuller at 3:09, giving the Colts a 1-0 lead.
The Colts struck a second time with the extra man in the dying seconds of the frame. Sifting through the neutral zone, Mark Scheifele sent Aaron Ekblad in all alone, and the defenseman made no mistake, lifting his 2nd over Altshuller's right shoulder.
Lucas Lessio came close to responding, but Mathias Niederberger flashed the leather, securing a 2-0 Colts advantage heading into the second period.
Both sides fired blanks in the middle frame with Oshawa holding the edge in shots, 11-7. Trevor Morbeck played an inspired twenty, leveling Barrie's attackers with some solid hits in Oshawa's zone, but through 40, the Generals still trailed 2-0, despite outshooting Barrie, 24-17.
In the third, the Generals cycled the puck well, but failed to generate any clear-cut scoring opportunities. The Colts padded their cushion at 5:41 when Steven Beyers sprung Anthony Camara free with a beautiful tape-to-tape pass on the power play. Camara cashed in his 4th, beating Altshuller stick side, making it 3-0 Barrie.
The Colts kept coming, completing their 4-0 victory with a goal from Andreas Athanasiou, who scored his 6th of the playoffs on a partial break.
The Generals did their best to crack Niederberger's shutout as Colin Suellentrop rang a blast off of the goaltender's facemask, but the final horn sounded a shutout and a 4-0 Barrie win.
The Colts now lead the Eastern Conference Semi-Final, 3-games-to-none, with Game 4 going this Tuesday April 9th at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa. Puck drops at 7:05 PM. Come on out and help the Generals extend the series.
