Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons snapped their five-game losing streak Friday, defeating the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 6-4 at SmokiesPark.
The Barons used a four-run first inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Smokies starter Corey Black (2-2, 3.54) walked the first three batters in the inning before a keyerror by Stephen Bruno on a potential double play ball hit by Rangel Ravelobrought home the first two runs of the inning. Kevan Smith followed with a two-run double to put the Barons ahead 4-0. Smith finished 3-for-5 with two RBI on the night.
Terry Doyle (3-3, 6.17) gave the Barons a much-needed strong pitching performance, allowing two runs on three hits over 6.0 IP. The lone blemish came in the second inning on a two-run double by Rubi Silva, which cut the Barons lead in half to 4-2.
A sacrifice fly by rehabbing White Sox INF Jeff Keppinger in the fourth gave the Barons some breathing room at 5-2. Micah Johnson would add an RBI double in the 8th, increasing the Barons lead to 6-2. Johnson would finish 2-for-4 on the night.
The extra runs would prove important as closer Cody Winiarski allowed a two-rundouble to Jorge Soler, cutting the Barons lead to 6-4. After a base hit by Rubi Silva, Jae-Hoon Ha stepped to the plate representing the winning run. However, Winiarski would retire Ha on a pop out to end the game.
With the win, the Barons improved to 13-21 on the season while the Smokies fell to 20-15. The Barons return to Regions Field Saturday night to begin a five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The Barons will send RHP Nick McCully (2-2, 6.33) to the hill in game one against RHP Daniel Corcino (3-3, 4.35). First pitch is scheduled for a 6:30 PM CDT on Saturday.
