JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Birmingham Barons scored three runs each in the seventh and eighth innings to complete a 6-0 win from Wednesday's suspended game, and then scored three ninth-inning runs to break a 1-1 tie in a 4-1 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in front of 4,213 at Budweiser Thirsty Thursday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The teams resumed Wednesday's game in a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Birmingham (30-30 second half, 62-66 overall) took the lead in the top of the seventh inning against Jacksonville right-hander Kolton Mahoney (3-8). In a five-hit inning, Barons first baseman Keon Barnum hit an RBI single, and center fielder Luis Basabe hit a two-run single to make it 3-0. In the eighth inning, right-hander Lukas Schiraldi allowed two walks, a hit batter and second baseman Mitch Roman's RBI single. Left-hander Miguel Del Pozo entered and allowed left fielder Joel Booker's two-run single for a 6-0 lead. Barons left-hander Brian Clark (2-3) and right-hander Brandon Brenan each pitched two scoreless innings.
In Thursday's scheduled game, Jacksonville right-hander Cody Poteet struck out a career-high 12 batters in a career-long eight innings, allowing only two hits, including a third-inning, one-out solo home run by left fielder Jameson Fisher.
Barons left-hander Kodi Medeiros kept the 1-0 lead until the sixth inning. Miami Marlins rehabbing outfielder Lewis Brinson hit a leadoff single to left field. Right fielder Monte Harrison then grounded into a fielder's choice, stole second base (his team-high 26th this season), went to third base on left fielder Brian Miller's groundout and scored on a wild pitch by Medeiros, who went 5 2/3 innings before right-hander Zach Thompson (4-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
The 1-1 tie stood until the ninth inning. Roman and designated hitter Zack Collins hit consecutive one-out singles against Jacksonville left-hander Jeff Kinley (3-2). Second baseman Trey Michalczewski hit a two-out, two-run double, and third baseman Matt Rose added an RBI single. Right-hander Jose Ruiz pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 14th save.
UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp open a series in Chattanooga at 7:15 p.m. Friday. Jacksonville returns home Thursday, Aug. 30, for the season's final series with the Mississippi Braves, beginning with a doubleheader at 5:05 p.m. on Budweiser Thirsty Thursday, when fans can purchase $1 12-oz. and $2 24-oz. beers adjacent to the Budweiser Tiki Terrace, the right-field concourse, and the Oasis concession stand behind section 115. $1 small sodas are sold at the concession stands. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. for Football Night in Jax, when fans can enter to win tickets to many different football games in the southeast. Jacksonville University Night will include alumni and students celebrating the start of another year at Jacksonville University. The game is also presented by Cox Media.
