Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the third consecutive game, and fifth time in 2015, Regions Field was packed to capacity Friday night as the Barons hosted Chattanooga for the final game of their six-game series. Despite a 7-5 loss in 10 innings and 5-1 series defeat, the home stand drew 35,156 fans to the ball park. It is the second-largest home stand attendance of the season, second only to the 35,988 that saw Birmingham take a 3-2 series win over Tennessee.
A two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning from Lookouts slugger Miguel Sano proved to be the game-winning hit in the series finale. Chattanooga reliever Nick Burdi picked up his third win of the year while D.J. Johnson received the save. Barons right-hander J.B. Wendelken was charged for the loss and Miguel Chalas was faulted with a blown save.
Jacob May, Chris Curley and Adrian Nieto accounted for the Barons four RBI while one run scored on a double-play ball to short. Christian Marrero scored two runs, followed by Danny Hayes, Jeremy Farrell and Marcus Lemon each scoring one.
Birmingham led the game 4-1 going into the top of the seventh. Chattanooga plated two runs to bring the Barons within one run, and took a 5-4 lead with one run in the ninth inning. Birmingham forced extra innings with a run in the final frame of regulation. Farrell doubled to lead off the inning and a Lemon sacrifice bunt pushed the veteran to third. With just the one out on the board, May ripped a single to right to score Farrell.
Tied 5-5 going into the 10th, Wendelken was brought on to pitch to the heart of the order. Two-spot hitter Jorge Polanco reached on a fielding error with Sano on deck. On an 0-2 pitch, the Twins No. 2 prospect lifted a high fly to left field that reached the VisionFirst Home Run Porch bleachers to put the Lookouts ahead by two. Johnson then retired the Barons side in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win.
The Barons hit the road early Saturday on their way to Mobile, Ala., to take on the BayBears in a five-game set, and then will travel directly to Huntsville, Ala., to take on the Biloxi Shuckers for a five-game series. The Barons return to Birmingham May 27 for the annual Rickwood Classic at Rickwood Field. They host the Jacksonville Suns for five, with the final four contests played at Regions Field.
