Birmingham Barons News Release
The Birmingham Barons allowed a five-run frame to the Tennessee Smokies in the fourth inning of Game 4. The inning for the Smokies put them in the driver's seat by four runs as the Barons had secured a run in the inning prior. The Barons brought the game within one score with a three run sixth, however, this was the closest the away team would get. The Barons dropped the Friday contest by a score of 5-4 to the Smokies.
The two foes in the first two innings delivered blows to each other from the mound that resulted in a pair of scoreless innings. The Barons broke the 0-0 tie on a Bryan Ramos home run in the top of the third inning. Ramos finished the night as the most prolific batter as he finished 1-4 from the plate with a run, an RBI and his fifth home run of the season.
Ramos got the Barons on the scoreboard early, however, starting LHP Garrett Schoenle in the first three innings was dealing from the bump. Schoenle conducted three scoreless innings in which he sat the Smokies down in ten batters. The Barons carried the lead into the fourth inning, but that score would be in favor of the Smokies by the end.
The Smokies collected five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Hayden McGeary two run home run and a Jordan Nwogu three run home run. The Barons and Schoenle escaped the fourth without other damage taking place, but it was the left-handers last inning in the ballgame.
Schoenle finished the night with 4.0 inning pitched, four hits, five earned runs, two walks, two home runs and three strikeouts.
The Barons tossed out RHP Nick Ernst to the mound to relieve Schoenle in the fifth inning. Birmingham and Tennessee would trade blows in the fifth, but neither would win the inning as the score stayed the same.
The Barons needed to start climbing the comeback mountain and a three-run top of the sixth inning is exactly what they needed to get the ball rolling. In the sixth, the Barons would score their runs on an RBI double by Xavier Fernandez, an RBI single from Taylor Snyder and a sacrifice fly from Terrell Tatum.
The scoreboard read 5-4 after the sixth inning and with both teams delivering from the mound the score would stay the same for the last three innings.
Birmingham threw out one more pitcher in the ballgame in LHP Gil Luna, who was electric in his 2.0 innings pitched. Luna finished his pair of innings with zero hits, one walk and four strikeouts. The innings of work from the left-hander kept the Barons in the ballgame and positioned them at the top of the ninth for one more opportunity to get anything on the offensive side of the ball.
The Barons in the ninth inning were sat down in order as the Smokies cemented their Game 4 victory.
Birmingham now sits down 3-1 in the series as they have dropped the past three games. The Barons will look to even out the series with two games left on Saturday and Sunday. First up is Game 5 on Saturday, July 8 in which RHP Cristian Mena is scheduled to take the bump.
