April 16, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL â The Birmingham Barons took a 2-1 series lead over the Mobile BayBears on Wednesday afternoon, edging the BayBears 4-2 at the Hoover Met in front of 1,593 fans.
The Barons took an early lead in the second against BayBears starter Cory Stewart (0-2) after Eric Battersby gained his first RBI of the season, knocking in Gabe Alvarez to give the Barons their first run of the game. The Barons tacked on three more runs in the inning after Josh Shaffer and Guillermo Reyes stroked RBI singles with a third run crossing the plate on a fielder's indifference call after Reyes got caught in a rundown.
The BayBears would answer with two runs in the third, both coming off Vince Faison's single to left, but were unable to push any more runs across as the Barons staff held them scoreless for the final six innings.
Barons starter Neal Cotts (3-0) pitched five innings and had nine strikeouts before giving way to the bullpen. The Barons pitching staff struck out 15 BayBear batters on the day and surrendered just five hits. Barons closer Royce Ring picked up his second save of the season after throwing two scoreless frames.
The series finale with Mobile is tomorrow night at 7:00. Birmingham sends out LHP Dennis Ulacia (0-2, 6.55) to face Baybears RHP Chris Rojas (0-1, 3.72).
