April 16, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release
ORLANDO -Orlando's starting pitcher Brian Stokes matched the Southern League's leading pitcher inning for inning, but took a heartbreaking loss as the Huntsville Stars edged out the Rays 1-0 in front of 1,265 fans at Cracker Jack Stadium.
Stokes (0-2) went 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits in taking the loss. Luis Martinez (2-0), who entered the game with an ERA of 0.00, held the Rays to three hits while striking out five. The Rays' bats helped Huntsville's pitchers out a lot, as Orlando stranded 10 runners on the evening. Matt Diaz paced the Rays attack with a 3-3 night, accounting for three of the team's five hits in the game. Jace Brewer and Amado German each added singles for the Rays, who dropped their second straight and fell to 6-7 on the season.
The same two teams square off in the series finale tomorrow at a special 11:05 a.m. game. The O-Rays will send right-hander Doug Waechter (0-1, 4.50) to the mound to take on right-hander Mike Jones (1-0, 1.86). For ticket information call (407) 939-GAME (4263).
