Barons Clinch Series with Thursday Win over Suns

Birmingham, Ala. - Aaron Poreda dealt seven scoreless innings with a career high 11 strikeouts, while Brandon Allen's first homerun of the season led the Birmingham Barons (9-4) to a 4-1 victory over the Jacksonville Suns (9-5) in front of 7,870 on Thursday night at Regions Park.

Poreda (1-2) struck out 11 hitters with only one walk while scattering four hits over seven scoreless innings for his first win of 2009. The 2007 first round pick dealt 103 pitches in his third outing of the season.

Aaron Thompson (1-1) picked up the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, and four hits over six innings. The 2005 first round pick dealt 96 pitches in his third outing of the season.

Fernando Hernandez (1) saved the game, dealing one and two-thirds innings of perfect relief.

The Barons opened the scoring in the first inning as Brandon Allen belted his first homerun of the season, a three-run blast to right-center to give Birmingham a 3-0 lead.

Birmingham added another run in the fourth inning on a C.J. Retherford single, scoring David Cook who led off the inning reaching on an error to open a 4-0 lead.

Jacksonville's lone run came on an eighth inning leadoff homerun from Matt Craig, finishing the scoring at 4-1.
