Cleveland Barons News Release
EDMONTON, ALBERTA - Jim Fahey scored the game-winning goal as the Barons defeated Edmonton 4-3 in front of 14,725 fans at the Rexall Place in Alberta. The Barons victory snapped the Road Runners four-game winning streak on home ice.
The Barons looked to their top scorer to provide the always-important first goal of the game and he responded. Ryane Clowe tallied his team-leading 17th of the year on a power play with just 32-seconds remaining in the period. Patrick Rissmiller and Marcel Goc provided the assists on a beautiful pass play that set up the goal. Cleveland was dominant in the stanza, out-shooting the Road Runners 15-9.
All momentum gathered by the Barons late in the first period was squandered in the opening moments of the second period. Edmonton scored just 70-seconds in the second period on a wrist shot from Jeff Woywitka. The Road Runners then took their first lead of the night scoring on a pass play 18-seconds later. Jamie Wright converted the goal for his 12th of the season. Cleveland showed no quit responding with two late goals to re-establish their one-goal advantage. Nick Bootland began the comeback with a backhand goal in front of the Road Runners to tie the game at 2-2. Mike Hoffman and Garrett Stafford assisted on Bootland's 6th goal of the season. Shane Joseph was then set free on a break with a lovely pass from Grant Stevenson to convert his 9th of the year and give the Barons a 3-2 lead. Joseph's goal came with just 41-seconds left in the period.
Both teams exchanged goals in the third period with the Barons bettering the Road Runners 4-3 in regulation play. Barons defenseman Jim Fahey scored the first tally of the period while the teams skated four-on-four. Fahey's goal was the third of the season and came on a rebound after the shot attempt from Grant Stevenson. Edmonton attempted a comeback, as J.J. Hunter tallied his 10th goal of the year to pull within one. Hunter's goal was scored as Edmonton pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. But the Road Runners dramatics fell short as the Barons defended their zone down the stretch to preserve a 4-3 win and tie the season series at three wins apiece.
Tomorrow night these same two teams face off in Edmonton for a 4pm (EST) matinee. Both teams then head on the road to face each other in Cleveland on Tuesday night at 7pm. For tickets, call the Barons front office at 216-420-0000 or Crash the Net at www.clevelandbarons.net.
