Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The bats fell silent in the later innings, leaving the Suns without a comeback attempt in a 4-3 loss to the Birmingham Barons on Thursday in front of 6,654 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Brennan King's sixth inning leadoff single was the final hit for the Suns. The Barons' bullpen completed the final 3-2/3 innings without allowing a baserunner.

The Suns (35-43 overall, 4-5 second half) scored single runs in each of the first two innings. Victor Diaz singled home Shane Victorino in the first inning, giving Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. Mike Collins' run-scoring groundout in the second pumped the lead up to 2-0.

The Barons (38-38, 5-3) stormed back with a run in the third inning and three more in the fourth off Suns starter Tommy Farmer. After loading the bases on two singles and a hit batter, Carlos Maldonado singled home Jeremy Reed to tie the game, 2-2. Jonathan Acevas hit a sacrifice fly and Chad Durham later singled in Scott Bikowski, giving Birmingham a 4-2 advantage.

Diaz scored Jason Repko on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to cap the scoring.

Farmer (5-6) pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. He and three teammates – Diaz, Joel Hanrahan and Edwin Jackson – were selected to the Southern League All-Star Game to be played Tuesday, July 8 in Jacksonville.

Barons starter Byeong An (2-0) allowed two earned runs through 5-1/3 innings to collect his 10th victory between Birmingham and Winston-Salem.

Victorino led the Suns with two hits.

Right-hander Heath Totten (3-9, 4.81 ERA) is scheduled to face Barons righty Tetsu Yofu (5-4, 3.43) at 7:35 p.m. Friday at the Baseball Grounds.
