BayBears drop series opener in Carolina
June 26, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release
Zebulon, NC â The Mobile BayBears came into their Thursday night game against Carolina having won their last seven games away from Hank Aaron Stadium. That streak ended as the Mudcats proved why they have the Southern League's best record. Carolina defeated the BayBears 8-2 in the opener of their four-game series.
Carolina jumped out in the first scoring three runs off of BayBears starter Duncan McAdoo. Mobile trimmed the lead in the top of the second to 3-2. BayBears' first baseman Jon Benick connected on his first Double-A homerun. The two-run shot scored Danny Bravo who had beaten out an infield single ahead of Benick.
That would be all the scoring for Mobile on the night as the Mudcats pitching combination of Josh Beckett and Trevor Hutchinson locked down the BayBears' bats. Beckett was making his final rehab start for the Florida Marlins and in four innings he allowed two runs on four hits while striking out seven, including the final six batters he faced.
Hutchinson earned the win, as he did not allow a BayBear hit until the top of the ninth after entering the game in the fifth.
The BayBears and Mudcats will play game two of their series Friday night at 6:15. LHP Roger Deago (5-4, 4.34) wil get the start on the mound for Mobile against Carolina's Donnie Bridges (5-1; 3.11).
