Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Birmingham Barons left-hander Tanner Banks pitched seven innings, and third baseman Trey Michalczewski homered and drove in four runs to help build a 6-0 lead in a series-opening 6-3 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in front of 3,993 on Baptist Health Sunday Family FUNday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Banks (4-4) worked around a pair of first-inning singles with a double play. He allowed a walk in the second inning and a walk and hit in the third inning before retiring eight batters in a row and facing the minimum for a span of 3 2/3 innings.
The Barons (27-29 second half, 59-65 overall) took the lead in the top of the first inning against Jacksonville left-hander McKenzie Mills (0-2). Left fielder Joel Booker hit a leadoff single to right field, stole second base and advanced on fly balls by center fielder Luis Basabe and Michalczewski. The visitors' lead grew in the top of the third inning, when Mills hit designated hitter Jameson Fisher and left fielder Joel Booker to begin the inning. Basabe hit a sacrifice fly, and Michalczewski hit a two-run home run to left field for a 4-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Mills walked Booker, who went to second base on a wild pitch, before Basabe hit an RBI single to center field. Mills allowed five earned runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts in five innings. Right-hander Max Duval pitched three innings in relief, allowing Michalczewski's second sacrifice fly - and Southern League-leading 12th of the season - in the top of the seventh inning.
Jumbo Shrimp shortstop Joe Dunand put Jacksonville (22-32, 50-72) on the scoreboard with his seventh Southern League home run leading off the seventh inning against Banks, who allowed five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Barons right-hander Jhoan Quijada allowed three straight eighth-inning singles to right fielder Monte Harrison, left fielder and second baseman Justin Twine, whose two-run single gave him a 15-game hitting streak.
