Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL â The Birmingham Barons sent a message Friday night as they destroyed the Mobile BayBears 15-4 in front of 4,419 fans at the Hoover Met. When the four-game series began the BayBears were right on the Barons' heals; but after scoring 39 runs in four games, Birmingham let it be known that they were still the defending Southern League champs.
Birmingham starter Kris Honel (1-0) made his second spot-start of the season for the Barons and after giving up two runs in the first on two walks, an error and a two-run single, he settled down a threw a solid game. The White Sox 2001 first-round draft pick, picked up his first Double-A victory after tossing 6.1 innings and giving up just three runs on three hits while striking out eight.
Honel's quality start was supported by more than enough offense. The torrid Barons' bats continued their hot pace as they knocked out 15 hits and scored a season-high 15 runs. Every starter had a hit and either scored a run or drove in a run on the night. Danny Sandoval had four hits and drove in a pair; Carlos Maldonado went 2-for-4 with a season-high four RBI and Guillermo Reyes went 1-for-3 with a season-high three RBI to highlight the night.
Jon Knott went 3-for-3 with two homers and all four RBI as the lone highlight for Mobile.
BayBear starter Cory Stewart (12-7) leads the Southern League in wins but the Barons seem to have his number. Stewart is 0-3 with an ERA over 11.00 in four starts against Birmingham and is 12-4 with an ERA in the mid-two's.
The Barons welcome the Chattanooga Lookouts to town for a four-game series starting tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM as they send out RHP Tetsu Yofu (8-7, 3.27) to face RHP Daylan Childress (1-3, 6.27). All the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
