
Stars Win Third Straight over Looks, 9-5

Huntsville, AL â Huntsville's offense scored in four of the first six innings and rolled to its third straight win over Chattanooga, 9-5, on Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (30-24, 70-52) retained a one-half game lead over Birmingham in the Southern League West second-half race.
Huntsville jumped on Lookouts starter Ty Howington for three runs in the first. Alejandro Machado led off with a walk, stole second and scored on J.J. Hardy's single to right. Corey Hart doubled Hardy to third and Brandon Gemoll walked. Noochie Varner grounded out to third, scoring Hardy. Brad Nelson walked and Kade Johnson singled home Hart for a 3-0 lead. In the second, Dave Krynzel walked, stole second and took third when the throw bounced into centerfield. Howington's wild pitch plated Krynzel to make it 4-0.
After Chattanooga cut the lead to 4-2, Huntsville led off the fifth with consecutive singles by Hart and Gemoll. Varner's groundout advanced the runners to second and third. Nelson ripped a single to right, scoring Hart and sending Gemoll to third. When the throw came through to the plate, Nelson broke for second where he was gunned down as Gemoll took off for home. Gemoll slid in and reaching back with his left hand to touch the plate, putting Huntsville up, 6-2.
The Lookouts rallied for three in the sixth, on Stephen Smitherman's two-run homer and Dane Sardinha's run-scoring single, but the Stars responded in the bottom of the frame. Daryl Clark led off with pinch-hit double to left-center and Machado walked. One out later, Clark was thrown out at third on a double steal. J.J Hardy walked to put runners at first and second. Hart lashed a single to score Machado, and Gemoll doubled to right-center, knocking in Hardy and Hart for a 9-5 advantage.
Pedro Liriano (9-11) recorded his third win in four starts, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits and two walks while equaling his season-high with eight strikeouts in six innings. Jeff Hundley notched his second save in his fourth appearance for the Stars, permitting just two hits and fanning three over three shutout innings. Howington (0-2) suffered his second loss in as many starts against the Stars, surrendering four runs, three earned, on three hits and six walks in 2 1/3 innings.
Huntsville now travels to Mobile for the first of a four-game series on Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Stars send righty Jason Shelley (2-0, 1.97) against Bay Bears right-hander Chris Oxspring (8-4, 2.93). Game time is 7:05 p.m. The Bill Penney Toyota Pre-game show starts at 6:50 p.m.
