Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â The Birmingham Barons slammed four home runs off Suns in an 8-0 victory Saturday in front of 4,918 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Coming into the game, Birmingham (39-39 overall, 6-4 second half) had hit 32 home runs all season in 77 games. A four home run outburst equals roughly a typical 10-game output for the Barons.
"What can you say they just saw the ball well tonight," Suns manager Dino Ebel said. "You've got to tip your cap to them and go out and play hard Monday night.
The Suns (36-44, 5-6) are off Sunday. They were shut out for the 10th time this season.
Suns starter Edwin Jackson gave up seven runs and three home runs â both career highs â while enduring the loss. Jackson (3-6) gave up a two-run home run to Jeremy Reed in the fourth inning, two batters after he had retired five in a row via strikeouts. Danny Sandoval hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, which was followed by a three-run shot to left by Gabe Alvarez. His home run gave the Barons a 7-0 lead and drove Jackson out of the game.
Guillermo Reyes led off the sixth inning, homering off reliever Brian Steffek which capped the scoring.
Barons starter Neal Cotts (8-2) pitched five innings, walking one and striking out seven. Rob Purvis and Matt Smith combined to complete the shutout.
Shane Victorino had two doubles to lead the Suns.
Right-hander Alfredo Gonzalez (3-3, 5.63 ERA) is scheduled to face Greenville Braves righty Adam Wainwright (5-5, 3.60) at 7:05 p.m. Monday at the Baseball Grounds.
