HOOVER, Ala. â The Birmingham Barons pounded 18 hits, putting the Suns in an insurmountable hole in a 7-2 victory Saturday in front of 5,563 fans at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
The Barons (42-42 overall, 9-7 second half) knocked 16 singles and got hits in each inning against the Suns. Carlos Maldonado's two-run double in the second inning gave Birmingham a 2-0 lead. Guillermo Reyes had his first of four hits, an RBI single to give the Barons a 3-0 advantage off Suns starter Alfredo Gonzalez.
Gonzalez (4-4) gave up a two-run single to Josh Shaffer in the third and an RBI double to Reyes in the fourth. In all, he allowed 12 hits and six runs before giving way to reliever Greg Bauer to begin the fifth inning.
