Mobile BayBears News Release
Huntsville, Ala. - Jake Gautreau blasted a two-run home run and scored two runs and Bobby Scales delivered a pinch hit two-run single to lead the Mobile BayBears to a 6-4 victory over the Huntsville Stars on Saturday. The win improves the BayBears second half record to 9-7 and lifts Mobile into a three-way tie for first place with Huntsville and Birmingham.
With Mobile leading 1-0 in the seventh, Scales lined a single to left field with the bases loaded, driving in Gautreau and Danny Bravo, to make it 3-0. The BayBears added their third run in the inning when Humberto Quintero scored from third on a fielder's choice play.
After Huntsville's Noochie Varner drilled a two-run homer off BayBears reliever Alan Webb in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-2, Gautreau answered with a long home run to right, his eighth of the year, in the eighth to again give Mobile a four run lead.
BayBears closer Rusty Tucker struggled in the ninth, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks, but he struck out Richard Paz looking with the tying runs in scoring position to end the game.
Mobile starting pitcher Cory Stewart (8-5) allowed just one hit over five shutout innings to earn the win.
Mobile will play at Huntsville at 6:05 PM Sunday in the final game before the league's three-day all-star break. Steve Watkins (5-4, 4.26) will pitch for Mobile.
