Barnstormers Sign Big League Veteran

The Lancaster Barnstormers have signed outfielder Alejandro De Aza, their first pick in the New Britain dispersal draft, it was announced today by manager Ross Peeples.

De Aza, 37, has played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues with seven different teams. His longest stint came with the Chicago White Sox (2010-14), the last three seasons of which the lefty batter was an everyday player. He batted .281 with 44 extra base hits during the 2012 season and belted 17 homers in 2013.

The native of the Dominican Republic first made it to the big leagues with the Florida Marlins in 2007. He has also played for the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets and Washington Nationals. He has been at the big league level as recently as 2017.

Altogether, he has played in 838 Major League games, batting .260 with 131 doubles, 51 homers and 91 stolen bases.

In 2019, De Aza signed with the New Britain Bees prior to the season. He hit .346 with six homers and 42 RBI while banging out 25 doubles in 69 games. His contract was purchased by the Minnesota Twins and batted .352 with Class AAA Rochester over the remainder of the season. The following winter, he batted .290 in the Mexican Pacific League.

The Barnstormers had the first selection of Bees players following the disbanding of the franchise at the end of the 2019 season, and Peeples took De Aza.

"In my opinion, he was the best player in the league in 2019," said Peeples. "He is an older guy but still moves very well and takes care of his body. I'm just glad we don't have to face him any more."
