Barnstormers No-Hit By Road Warriors
July 4, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Road Warriors left-handers Andres Caceres and Luis Cruz combined to no-hit the Lancaster Barnstormers for six innings on a waterlogged Fourth of July as the travel squad picked up a 4-0, rain-shortened win at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The game was called during the seventh inning stretch.
Caceres, making his first Atlantic League start, issued a two-out walk to Blake Gailen in the bottom of the first inning, then proceeded to retire the remaining 13 batters that he faced. Lancaster's biggest tests of Caceres near perfection were a fly out to the warning track in right by Gailen in the fourth inning and Grant Desme's grounder to the left side hole which was snapped up by third baseman Gustavo Pierre and turned into the final out in the fifth inning.
Caceres (2-0) was lifted after throwing 70 pitches over his five innings. Cruz took over in the bottom of the sixth and struggled. He walked Nate Coronado to start the inning. Pierre made a good play on a bunt by Tyler Bortnick for the first out. Darian Sandford also walked, but Cruz was able to fan Rico Noel and, following a balk, Gailen to end the threat.
The Road Warriors picked up two runs off Nate Reed (6-2) in the top of the second. Geraldo Valentin reached second when his grounder to third eluded Coronado for an error. Pierre followed with a single to left center, chasing Valentin to third. One-time Barnstormer Isaac Wenrich grounded to first to drive in one run. After Chris Rivera fanned for the second out, Matt Hibbert ripped Reed's first pitch into left to plate Pierre with the second run of the inning.
Rivera belted a two-run homer with two outs in the fourth to cap the scoring.
The series and the first half will conclude on Thursday night at 7:00. Lancaster will send lefty John Anderson (0-1) to the mound for a spot start. The Road Warriors will counter with left-hander Kelvin Villa (2-6).
