Barnstormers Lose First Try with New Overtime Rule
May 2, 2019 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers did not have a great first experience with the new extra inning rule employed by the Atlantic League in 2019.
Long Island took advantage of its placed runner at second base in the top of the tenth inning while the Barnstormers were unable to match the run in the bottom of the frame as the Ducks took a 5-4 decision in the third game of a four-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium Wednesday evening.
The top of the 10th inning opened with Mike Olt at second base for the Ducks. A Bryan Harper (0-1) wild pitch moved Olt to third, and he scored on a sacrifice fly to right center by Ivan DeJesus, Jr. Harper escaped more trouble in the inning by coaxing a double play out of Vladimir Frias to end the threat.
Under the new league rules, Darian Sandford took second to start the bottom of the inning. Dan Gamache moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt, but Lancaster could not push him across. Enrique Burgos (1-0) struck out Joe Terdoslavich on a 3-2 fastball, and Caleb Gindl grounded to short to end the night.
A barrage of singles off Matt Marksberry in the fifth and sixth innings put Long Island into a 4-1 lead. The Ducks broke a 1-1 tie as Frias and Rey Fuentes banged out consecutive hits to start the fifth, and a Steve Lombardozzi fielder's choice grounder plated the run.
Base hits by De Jesus and Matt den Dekker put runners at first and third to open the sixth. Marksberry struck out Ramon Cabrera for the first out, but Frias punched an RBI single into center for a 3-1 lead. Fuentes made it 4-1 with a single looped down the left field line.
Gindl singled home one run off Vin Mazzaro in the eighth to trim the Long Island advantage to 4-2. Following a double play smashed into by Josh Bell, K.C. Hobson unloaded a game tying, two-run homer to level the score.
The series concludes on Thursday evening with Jonathan Albaledejo (0-1) on the hill for Lancaster against right-hander Tim Melville (1-0). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Hobson's homer was his 17th career blast against the Ducks and his 57th as a Barnstormer...Gindl has batted safely in all six games...Lancaster's pitching struck out 11 more batters and has now whiffed 68 in six games...Marksberry was making his fourth appearance of the season...Harper has thrown four innings against the Ducks...Newcomer Andury Acevedo pitched a scoreless seventh for Lancaster.
