Iowa Barnstormers News Release
DES MOINES - The red-hot Iowa Barnstormers (2-2) take a two-game win streak on the road Friday to Green Bay in search of a share of the Midwest Division lead against the Green Bay Blizzard (3-2).
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (Iowa time) Friday, May 2, at U.S. Cellular Field at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
A half-game separates all six teams in the af2's American Conference Midwest Division. Green Bay, Lexington and Louisville are bunched at the top with matching 3-2 records, while af2 newcomer, Peoria, joins Quad City and the Barnstormers at 2-2.
The Barnstormers' recent success has been keyed by a well-balanced offense, a suffocating defense and opportunistic special teams play. Led by rookie QB Joe Brannen, who is undefeated as a starter, Coach John Gregory's offensive unit has evenly distributed the ball to its talented receiving corps and incorporated timely running plays by veteran Terrance Freeney and punishing newcomer Justin Butler. On the other side of the ball, the âStormers have notched both a defensive and special teams touchdown in each game during its current two-game win streak.
Green Bay, which has made three consecutive post-season playoff appearances, is again among the top teams in the American Conference. Setting the pace for the Blizzard in 2008 has been the af2's top defensive unit, allowing a stingy 210 yards per game through the season's first five weeks.
Injury update. The team has not yet released an update on the condition of all-league defensive back Tanner Varner, who left the âStormers win over Stockton in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury.
Green Bay Fun Fact. The Blizzard are owned and operated by former Green Bay Packer Brian Noble, who played linebacker for the NFL Packers from 1985-1993.
Barnstormers' fans can catch all the action in Green Bay live on the radio at ESPN AM 1700 The Champ or broadcast online on the Barnstormers Video Network found at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.
