Lancaster Stormers News Release

These days, the Lancaster Barnstormers keep challenging themselves - and meeting those challenges.

Wednesday evening, Lancaster fell behind, 6-1, after two innings but rallied for a 9-6 win over the Newark Bears at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium to extend their winning streak to four. The Barnstormers have been forced to come back from early deficits in each of the three games at Newark.

The Bears sprayed seven hits against Barnstormers starter Josh Hall (5-2) over the first two innings. Scott Spiezio gave Newark a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to right in the first inning. Daryle Ward followed with a bloop hit down the left field line, and both runners advanced when the ball spun away from Reggie Taylor. Carl Everett drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Hall got a one-hopper back to the mound from John-Ford Griffin but could only get the force at the plate as his low throw to the plate handcuffed Jed Morris. Vic Rodriguez made Hall and the Barnstormers pay with a two-run ground single to left.

Joe Gaetti singled home a run in the second inning before the Bears went back to work. James Cooper laced a one-out single to left and advanced on a ground out. Spiezio picked up Cooper with another line drive single into right for a 4-1 lead and took second on a throw home. A shallow pop fly by Ward dropped into left center to score Spiezio. Carl Everett tacked on another run with a long double to the gap in right center as Newark built the lead to five.

Hall and the bullpen held the Bears to only three more hits over the rest of the night.

Aaron Herr slammed a three-run homer to left in the top of the third to bring Lancaster to within two. Gaetti made it a one-run game with a leadoff homer that just cleared the left field wall, cutting the lead to 6-5. Bubba O'Donnell (3-3) walked Morris, and Reggie Taylor followed with a single to right. Lloyd Turner moved the runners with a bunt. O'Donnell walked Jason Perry to load the bases. He appeared to get out of the inning when Herr skimmed a grounder to short. Gabe Suarez forced Perry at second, but Spiezio had trouble getting the ball out of his glove then skipped a throw past Daryle Ward as Morris and Taylor scored for a 7-6 lead.

The Barnstormers were blanked for four innings by the Newark bullpen. That ended in the ninth. Bryant Nelson stroked a leadoff single into center. Ryan Mulhern popped up a bunt for the first out. Nelson was put into motion, and Adam Witter slammed a double into left center, stretching the lead to two. Gaetti followed with a single to center, his fourth hit of the night, scoring Witter.

Pat Overholt, the third Lancaster reliever, retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save.

The Barnstormers will go for the sweep on Thursday night before returning home to take on York. Ben Fritz (0-4) will pitch for Lancaster against Vince Perkins (0-3) in the series finale at 6:35.
