Iowa Barnstormers News Release
Des Moines, Iowa - The Iowa Barnstormers played what was arguably their most solid all-around game of the season on Saturday Night as they defeated the Kansas City Command 62-42 in front of a Wells Fargo Arena crowd of 7,962. With the win, the Barnstormers improve to 4-5 on the season, while Kansas City remains winless with a record of 0-8.
Both teams struggled a bit early, but the Barnstormers took control as QB J.J. Raterink found WR Marco Thomas for an 8 yard scoring strike on the final play of the first quarter to put Iowa up 17-7. Raterink was nearly perfect on the night, completing 24 of 29 passes for 253 yards and 6 touchdowns. He connected with four different Iowa receivers for scores, while also running for a TD. The Command cut the lead to 24-21 and was looking to take the lead when Iowa's Justin Mincey intercepted a Matt Gutierrez pass and took it the distance for a score to put Iowa up 31-21. Kicker Craig Camay had his best game as a Barnstormer, connecting on two first half field goals and all 8 PAT attempts. His 51 yard field goal as time expired gave Iowa a 34-21 cushion at the half.
Iowa continued to shine throughout the second half as Raterink found Schmidt for two more scores, increasing the Barnstormers lead to 20. Kansas City's lone bright spot was WR Armand Robinson who caught 13 passes for 143 yards and 4 touchdowns. Barnstormers OL/TE B.J. Cabbell caught his first career TD pass to close the scoring. LB John Mohring also had a strong game for Iowa, finishing with a team-high 10 tackles and an interception.
The Barnstormers are back on the road next week, as they head to Florida to battle the defending AFL Champion Jacksonville Sharks. Iowa will return home on Friday, May 25 when the Spokane Shock come to town. Kickoff is set for 7:05pm.
