Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL - A trio of Birmingham Baron's (64-71, 37-29) arms combined to shutout the Biloxi Shuckers (81-56, 40-28) on Sunday evening in a 3-0 defeat at Regions Field. Cushion by a three-run second inning, Birmingham pitching allowed seven hits to the Shuckers but managed to strand seven runners on the day.
Cameron Roegner (L, 5-6) escaped an early jam in the first, allowing a single to Luis Basabe and issuing a pair of walks that loaded the bases. Biloxi's left-hander managed to strike out Nate Nolan and leave the first unscathed, but encountered more trouble in the second. With Joel Booker and Luis Gonzalez aboard, Basabe connected for a go-ahead single and Blake Rutherford drilled a two-run double off the left field wall.
Padded with a 3-0 advantage, Tanner Banks (W, 5-7) tossed scoreless baseball into the seventh and worked around all six hits allowed to the Shuckers offense. Biloxi's best chance to score came in the fourth as C.J. Hinojosa double and Jontgel Segovia single with two out, putting runners on the corners. Banks proceeded to strike out Bruce Caldwell and close the inning, the second of four strikeouts on the day for Caldwell.
Bennett Sousa recorded the final two outs of the seventh along with tossing a scoreless eighth. Danny Dopico (S, 6) plunked Weston Wilson to start the ninth, but recovered to retire three in a row to close the game.
The Shuckers conclude the regular season on Monday in Birmingham with first pitch scheduled for 11:30 am CT.
