Banged up Bruins Win Fifth Straight
December 12, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Austin Bruins News Release
The Austin Bruins roster going into Friday s game had more marks and corrections than a high school English paper. Without eight of its regulars due to injuries and illness, the Bruins (15-7-7) battled to a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Magicians (13-17-0) for the Bruins fifth consecutive win.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period, as the Bruins held a narrow shots advantage 9-8. Scoring chances were few and far between for both sides, as Austin s Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) and Minnesota s Chris Amsden (St. Peter, MN) faced mostly manageable shot attempts.
At 4:16 of the second period, former Bruin Brady Jones (Farmington Hills, MI) scored his first goal against his old team, giving the Magicians the 1-0 lead. Jack Christiensen (Ridgefield, CT) centered a pass from behind the Bruins net that was deflected on to the stick of Jones, who snapped it past Kielly.
Two and a half minutes later, Alex Pettersson (Ockero, Sweden) tied it up for the Bruins on a backhander from low in the left circle. Give credit to the hard forecheck from Pettersson, Trevor Boyd (Muskegon, MI) and newcomer Travis Kothenbeutel (Sauk Rapids, MN) on that shift for the goal. Kothenbeutel earned his first career assist on the play.
Pettersson struck again from a similar spot at 7:01 of the third, again from Kothenbeutel and another affiliate player, Sam Richter (Waterloo, IA). That goal turned out to be the game-winner, as Kielly turned away 27 shots for his third straight win and ninth of the season. Amsden had 32 saves in a loss.
Austin is now 6-0 all-time against the Magicians, and the two teams will play a home-and-home series next weekend. The Bruins will host Friday night, with Richfield hosting next Saturday s game, December 20th.
First, Austin will travel to Lacrosse, WI to take on the Coulee Region Chill, with game time scheduled for 6pm. The Bruins and Chill have played four times this year, with Coulee Region leading the head-to-head series 3-1.
