Bulls Fall to IceRays 8-4

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - A third period rally fell short on Thursday night for the Amarillo Bulls at American Bank Center.

Once trailing 6-2, the Bulls pulled to within two goals in the final three minutes only to fall 8-4 to the Corpus Christi IceRays. The loss snapped a two game winning streak for the Bulls and it also prevented them from climbing into a tie for the sixth and final playoff spot with the idol Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.

Charlie Combs, Riley Christensen, Luke Novak and Trent Dillinger netted markers for Amarillo, while Anton Martinsson took the loss in goal. The difference in the game was the first two periods where Corpus Christi scored three times in each stanza with the majority of them coming early.

It was a slow start to the game for the Amarillo Bulls as the hometown IceRays were able to score the game's first three goals in a five minute span. The third goal sent starting goaltender Anton Martinsson to the bench and he was replaced by Jacob Weatherly. The Bulls rallied after the goaltending change and had the better of the scoring chances over the final 12 minutes. Trent Dillinger helped the Bulls cause when he scored on a chance in front of the net from Riley Christensen at 10:51. AJ Duggan missed on the power play in the final 10 seconds when his shot was denied by Luke Pickar. The IceRays outshot the Bulls 11-10 in the first period.

The second period didn't start any better for the Bulls as Corpus Christi rattled off two goals less than four minutes apart to increase their lead to 5-1. Amarillo got one back when Charlie Combs tapped home a puck across the goal line from AJ Duggan and Joey DiBenedetto at 12:10. The IceRays rounded out the scoring in the stanza converting a 2 on 1 to make it 6-2. Amarillo outshot the IceRays 12-9 in the second period.

Riley Christensen began the Bulls comeback attempt in the third period when he scored from Addison Runey at 6:36. Christensen shot beat goaltender Pickar cleanly on the glove slide. With the Bulls continuing to push ahead, Luke Novak gave his teammates even more momentum when his shot from along the boards beat Novak. AJ Duggan also notched an assist on the play.

The Bulls were then sent on the power play in the final three minutes hoping to use it to the fullest advantage. Goaltender Jacob Weatherly was pulled for the extra attacker, but on the ensuing play, a Corpus Christi player grabbed the puck along the boards and fired it into the empty net. The IceRays rounded out the scoring in the final ninety seconds to secure the win.

The Corpus Christi IceRays narrowly outshot the Amarillo Bulls 32-31 including 15-11 in the third period. There were a total of five power play opportunities with the Bulls going 0 for 4 and Corpus Christi was 0 for 1.
