VIERA, Fla. - Chicago Bandits right-hander Ally Carda issued consecutive walks to allow the game-winning run to cross the plate as the USSSA Pride earned a 1-0 victory in eight innings Friday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida.
Carda, who entered in relief of rookie southpaw Paige Lowary with two aboard and two outs in the extra frame, granted Pride first baseman Lauren Chamberlain a free pass on five pitches to load the bases before shortstop Shelby Pendley fought back from an 0-2 count to walk in the lone run of the ballgame.
The late-inning blemish squandered a strong start from Bandits veteran right-hander Rachele Fico, who kept the Pride off the scoreboard through four innings. Fico didn't allow a baserunner until the fourth and surrendered just a single hit before giving way to the bullpen.
A combination of Lowary, along with second-year right-hander Coley Ries, delivered 3.2 scoreless innings. Lowary didn't allow a hit and struck out four but was saddled with a tough loss. The former Oklahoma standout walked a pair of batters in the eighth before Carda entered.
The Bandits outhit the league-leading Pride for a second consecutive night by a 7-2 margin but could not take advantage with runners in scoring position. Leadoff doubles from Kristyn Sandberg and Brenna Moss in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, went by the wayside. Moss' extra-base hit represented one her three base knocks on the night.
USSSA starting right-hander Jessica Burroughs did not factor into the decision after she scattered four hits across five shutout frames.
Jolene Henderson collected her ninth victory of the season for the Pride in a relief effort.
The Bandits and Pride will conclude their three-game series with a 6 p.m. first pitch Saturday at Space Coast Stadium. The game will be broadcast via NPFTV.
