Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, VT- A big night for the Mountaineers offense helped them take their third straight game in a row, defeating the North Adams SteepleCats 10-5.
The Mountaineers started quick again, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State) led off the game with a walk, Ben Bavly (Newton, MA/ Northeastern) tripled to left center, scoring Kelley. Bavly would come around to score on a single from Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone), giving Vermont the 2-0 lead.
They would add two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, extending the lead to five. North Adams would strike back for two in the top of the seventh, but Vermont countered with two of their own in the bottom of the seventh. After Kelley reached first on a fielder's choice, Bavly would single. Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) would walk, loading the bases. Median would come up and deliver a two run single off the wall in left field, making the lead 7-5.
Vermont starter Mark Connor (St. Albans, VT/ Clarkson) would look good for the first five innings, but would exit in the sixth with runners on base. He picked up the win for Vermont, going five and two thirds innings, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out three.
The scare for Vermont came in the top half of the eighth inning, allowing the tying run to reach second base, but Levi Abrahamson (Mountain Home, ID/ Missouri Western) would come in and strike out Tony Ortiz (Lacey, WA/ Missouri) to end the threat.
Vermont would add three more in the bottom of the eighth, giving the 10-5 lead, which they would eventually go on to win by. The loss for North Adams went to Jeff Hayner (Lake Katrine, NY/ Niagra), who only lasted three and two thirds innings, giving up four runs on five hits while walking five and striking out three.
Vermont (14-18) creeps ever closer to the third spot in the playoffs, and are now five games back of third place Keene (19-14). Valley (21-10) still controls the division, and are eight games above Vermont. The Mountaineers are right back at it Tuesday, as they will host Winnipesaukee (8-24). The game starts at 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
