Erie Otters News Release
The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League announced today that Ontario Hockey League Commissioner and Canadian Hockey League President David Branch would be a special guest at the Jason Baird Benefit being held Tuesday, August 19th from 7-9 p.m. at the Warner Theatre. Branch has served as the OHL Commissioner since 1979 and CHL President since 1996 and has guided the two entities through an unprecedented era of growth and prosperity. "It's important for the League to be involved in events like this and to provide us with the opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous courage that Jason and his family has shown to overcome the challenges that this terrible accident has presented," said OHL Commissioner and CHL President David Branch. "One of the great things about this sport is that people rally in times of need and it's not surprising to see the outpouring of support from friends and fans of Jason and the Otters." Branch joins National Hockey League players and Otters Alumni Members Mike Rupp (New Jersey Devils), Tim Connolly (Buffalo Sabres) and Steve Valiquette (New York Rangers) as well as former Otters goaltender Adam Munro and former Otters captain Colin Pepperall who have all confirmed their attendance at the fundraiser. Additional NHL Players and Otters Alumni Members are expected to join the event as it draws closer. Tickets for the event are on sale now at the Otters Office, located at 809 French Street. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under) and includes a chance to win great hockey memorabilia door prizes. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Baird Family to assist in his mounting medical costs. For those unable to attend the Baird Benefit, PNC Bank is accepting donations to the Erie Otters Jason Baird Benefit Fund at any of their area locations. The Baird Benefit will feature autograph and picture opportunities with all players in attendance as well as memorabilia raffles and auction items. Hungry Howie's Pizza will be providing light snacks during the event and a cash bar will be available. Baird, a member of the Otters from 1997-2001, suffered severe burns to more than 60 percent of his body in a landscaping accident July 17th in Austintown, Ohio. The 27 year-old from Cayuga, Ontario is receiving treatment at the Akron Burn Center.
