Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS (July 13, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts were not able to overcome a first inning deficit for a second straight night as they dropped a 7-4 decision to Kansas City on Monday evening. One day after coming back from an early 1-0 hole to win 10-3, designated hitter Adam Bailey made sure that a similar fate would not await the T-Bones. His bases clearing double off of Jason Van Skike in the fourth inning turned out to be the decisive blow.

Bailey was responsible for Kansas City (26-19) grabbing that early one run lead. The first two T-Bones hitters reached base safely against Van Skike (4-2) before Jake Blackwood bounced into a double play. With two outs, Bailey came through with a soft single that put Kansas City on top.

The Wingnuts (27-22) stormed back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead away. David Espinosa drew a one out walk and scored when T.J. Mittelstaedt drove a double off the wall in the right field corner to tie the score. Mittelstaedt moved to third on a fielder's choice and raced home when Starlin Rodriguez's groundball was mishandled by third baseman James Boddicker.

The T-Bones wasted no time in responding. In the next inning the first three batters each recorded a hit to tie the score at 2-2. After Jacob Hayes struck out, Ryan Cavan worked a walk to load the bases. Nate Tenbrink flipped an RBI single into shallow left field to make it 3-2 and then Blackwood lifted a sacrifice fly to left for his 27th RBI of the season.

Kansas City had the bases loaded against the Wingnuts' starter once again in the fourth with Bailey due up. He delivered the crushing blow by driving a ball off the base of the wall in right field that cleared the bases and made it 7-2. Van Skike ended up going 5.0 innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits.

From that point forward, the relief trio of Alex Boshers, Frankie Reed, and Daniel Bennett stymied the T-Bones. Their effort provided the offense an opportunity to work back in the contest.  They put the opportunity to good use in the seventh. Rodriguez and Matt Padgett began the stanza with singles and the former scored on John Nester's hard roller through the left side. Padgett would also score on a passed ball to pull the Wingnuts within 7-4, but the team stranded a pair in the inning and never seriously threatened again.

Bailey finished the game 2-3 with four RBI. Kansas City's Mike Nannini (1-0) lasted 6.0 innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on only two hits. The Wingnuts bullpen combined to work 10.1 scoreless innings over the last three games in the series. They surrendered just four hits in that span.

The Wingnuts will host Joplin for a rare one game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Alex Koronis (0-1) toes the rubber for Wichita with RHP Matt Parish expecting to throw for the Blasters.
