Solis Gets First 'W' as 'Cats End Homstand on High Note

Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Tough luck rookie Rene Solis, who had been 0-5 this season despite allowing more than three runs only twice this year, finally got his first win of the season in a Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-2 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries Monday to end a rocky homestand at the U.S. Steel Yard.

With a 12:10 p.m. first pitch on Youth and Senior Day at the ballpark, the RailCats (23-26) cashed in early to give Solis an early 2-0 lead after the first inning.

That was all Solis needed as he finished his day after six innings, giving up no runs on three hits while walking four and striking out four more.

With the score 3-0 in the top of the seventh, Canaries shortstop Vikash Ramjit, in the game after starter Jerome Peña was thrown out by first base umpire Steve Linton, lifted a no-doubt two-run home run to left field to make it a one-run game.

Gary South Shore added insurance runs in each of the last three innings on Tillman Pugh and Adam Taylor sacrifice flies and a Michael Schroeder RBI single.

Sioux Falls (22-28) starter Shawn Blackwell went five-plus innings, snapping a streak of eight straight quality starts against the RailCats.

The 'Cats will rest up with an off day Tuesday before hitting the road for an eight-game road trip to face Winnipeg (21-27) and current wild-card leader Kansas City (25-19).
