Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, FL- The Palm Beach Cardinals were back in action at Roger Dean Stadium following a league wide three day break for the All-Star game. However, the first game of the second half did not pan out exactly how the Cardinals would have liked, falling 8-6 to the St. Lucie Mets in a contest that featured 26 total hits.
The Mets came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, tagging Palm Beach starter, Tyler Melling (6 IP, 7 H, 5ER, 2BB, 4K), for four runs on a walk, two singles and a three-run home run off the bat of Kevin Plawecki (2-5, HR, 4RBI) in the top of the first.
Heading into the bottom of the third, Palm Beach was facing a 5-0 deficit. Although the Mets seemingly had every ounce of momentum in their favor, the Cardinals broke out with an offensive outburst of their own, plating five runs on six consecutive hits including a 2-RBI double from Stephen Piscotty (3-5, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI). Piscotty would later smash a RBI ground rule double in the sixth to give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead.
To the apprehension of the Palm Beach dugout, the Mets would retake the lead in the 7th on a throwing error by Cardinals second baseman Colin Walsh. The two runs in the inning would ultimately prove to be enough for the Mets to notch their first win of the second half.
Offensively for the redbirds, Nick Longmire (4-4, RBI), David Popkins (2-5), Jonathan Rodriguez (2-5, 2B, RBI) and Stephen Piscotty all collected multiple hits on the night.
The two teams will play the second game of a three game series tomorrow, 6:35 p.m. at Roger Dean Stadium. Zach Petrick will get the starting nod for the Cardinals while Angel Cuan will take the mound for the Mets.
