Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 20, 2013) - The Fort Myers Miracle opened the second half of the Florida State League schedule with a 5-2 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday evening at Hammond Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Miracle exploded for five runs on five hits off Jupiter starter Josh Hodges to take control of the game. With one out, Wilkin Ramirez, on an MLB rehabilitation assignment, walked. Then, Kennys Vargas singled into right field followed by a base hit from Jhon Goncalves to the load the bases.
Jairo Rodriguez stepped up and lifted a shallow fly ball into right field that plated Ramirez and tied the game, 1-1. After Mike Kvasnicka struck out, John Murphy hit a two-out, two run single into right field to put Fort Myers ahead. Murphy then stole second base and Candido Pimentel doubled down the line in left to push across another pair of runs and give the Miracle a 5-1 lead. Pimentel's double knocked Hodges (1-2) out of the game for Jupiter.
Miracle starter Matt Summers allowed just two runs on three hits over five innings. Summers (2-4) struck out five and walked just one, but did give up a solo homer to Josh Adams in the fifth.
Fort Myers' bullpen combined for four hitless, shutout innings. Adrian Salcedo notched a pair of strikeouts and Zack Jones fanned three. Jones earned his eighth save of the year.
After winning the first half in the FSL South Division, the Miracle begin the second half with a win and have not fallen below first place since the start of the 2013 season.
The Miracle (46-22, 1-0) host the Hammerheads (36-33, 0-1) for the second of a three-game set on Friday evening. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and after the final out, the Miracle will host the South Florida Wrestling Association with six matches.
