New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
David Hurlbut gave up two hits in seven innings to lead the Round Rock Express to a 3-1 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes on Sunday afternoon.
After pounding out 29 hits in 14 innings during Saturday's doubleheader, the Express continued to swing hot bats early on Sunday as Scott Heineman led off the game with a single and scored two batters later on a single by Juan Centeno.
Tommy Joseph hit his second home run of the series and seventh of the season in the fifth inning to double the Express lead, and Destin Hood went deep an inning later to put Round Rock in front, 3-0.
Round Rock finished with nine home runs in the four-game set.
The 'Cakes got a leadoff single from Austin Dean in the bottom of the first, but he was stranded at third base and New Orleans did not pick up another hit off Hurlbut until Tomas Telis singled with one out in the seventh.
A day after rallying for a 10-8 victory in the second game of a doubleheader, the 'Cakes were held to two hits over the first eight innings.
Hurlbut (1-3) faced one batter over the minimum across his final six innings to earn his first win of the year. The left-hander struck out five, walked two and induced three double plays in seven innings.
Ricky Rodriguez worked around a two-out walk in the eighth inning, and R.J. Alvarez gave up a walk and a pair of singles in the ninth, including a run-scoring hit by Telis to break up the shutout, before retiring Chad Wallach on a fly out to nail down his eighth save.
Trevor Richards (2-1) scattered seven hits in six innings and was charged with three runs - two earned - to record his fourth quality start in as many outings since joining the Baby Cakes on May 1. Richards struck out four and walked one, and Drew Rucinski chipped in three scoreless innings of relief.
New Orleans settled for a split of the series and the eight-game homestand, and will begin an eight-game road trip on Monday in Omaha. FIrst pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
