Binghamton managed a 3-1 victory in Rochester after shaking off an early second period deficit by rattling off three unanswered goals. Andrew Hammond turned aside 16 of 17 shots faced in route to his ninth victory for the season.

Phil Varone notched his seventh marker of the year 3:12 into the middle frame to break a scoreless tie off assists from Luke Adam and Matt MacKenzie. Binghamton evened the score 1-1 off Buddy Robinson's seventh goal of the year at the 14:05 mark of the stanza. Rochester goaltender Matt Hackett initially managed a save on a Wacey Hamilton shot, but Shane Prince ricocheted the puck off a rebound to an awaiting Robinson who lifted the puck over Hackett's pad. Late in the period Corey Cowick collected a puck deep in Binghamton's defensive zone and moved it up to a skating David Dziurzynski. Dziurzynski alertly relayed the puck up ice to a streaking Matt Puempel who then wristed a shot past Hackett with just two seconds on the clock giving the B-Sens a 2-1 lead heading into the final intermission.

Rochester spent the majority of the third period working their penalty kill with all four penalties called against the Americans. Andre Petersson doubled Binghamton's lead with less than three minutes remaining on a power-play goal to move the final score to 3-1.

Friday, Jan. 10: Hershey 2, Binghamton 4

Binghamton earned their sixth straight win on home ice with a 4-2 win over Hershey on Friday. Nathan Lawson notched his 14th win of the year stopping 29 of 31 shots faced while opposing goaltender David Leggio turned aside 32 of the 35 shots he faced in the losing effort.

The B-Sens struck first with Derek Grant's second short-handed goal for the season at the 11:47 mark of the opening 20 minutes of play. The goal gave Binghamton, who leads the AHL in man-down strikes, 10 for the season. Binghamton held the 1-0 advantage into the first intermission with Lawson turning aside all 12 Bears chances in the period.

Hershey took just 44 seconds to even the score 1-1 off of Brandon Segal's eighth goal this season. Binghamton regained the lead when Matt Puempel took a centering feed from Andre Petersson and lifted the puck past Leggio making it 2-1. Less than two minutes later, the Bears clawed back to make it 2-2 when Segal tallied his second goal for the night. However, the back-and-forth battle continued with Shane Prince putting Binghamton back out front 3-2 at the 11:21 spot of the middle frame. The score remained 3-2 heading into the final intermission.

Binghamton held the Bears to just seven shots on goal in the final 20 minutes of regulation to earn the victory. Cole Schneider put home a short-handed insurance goal with less than one minute to play to move the final score to 4-2. Defenseman Fredrik Claesson finished with two secondary assists and a plus-3 rating on the ice continuing his fine play.

Saturday, Jan. 11: Adirondack 4, Binghamton 1

PP: Adirondack 1 for 3, Binghamton 0 for 8

The B-Sens failed to complete a perfect weekend as they fell to the visiting Adirondack Phantoms 4-1 in their sixth game in nine nights. Andrew Hammond stepped in for Binghamton's starting goaltender Nathan Lawson after Lawson left the game with a lower-body injury early in the first period. Hammond stopped 24 of 26 shots faced in the loss.

Adirondack struck first 3:22 into the opening period when Kris Newbury buried a low slap shot past Lawson for his tenth goal on the season. The Phantoms doubled the lead on a power-play goal with less than two minutes to play. Jason Akeson stick-handled his way through Binghamton's penalty-kill unit and blasted his tenth marker of the year past an outstretched Hammond giving the visitors a 2-0 lead heading to the locker room.

The second period was a penalty filled frame with three fights and not much offense for either team. B-Sens captain, Mark Borowiecki, dropped the gloves twice during the middle stanza attempting to fire up his teammates. Andre Petersson tallied his eleventh goal for the year with less than three minutes to play in the period and cut the Phantoms lead to one. Petersson took a pass from defenseman Danny New and maneuvered through Adirondack's defense before ripping a wrist shot over the glove side of Phantoms goaltender Yann Danis. Hammond stopped all 12 Adirondack shots to hold the Phantoms lead to one entering the final period of regulation.

Despite having three power-play opportunities during the final 20 minutes of play, Binghamton came up empty. With less than a minute to play, Akeson notched his second goal of the game on an empty B-Sens net before Rob Bordson pushed a second insurance goal past Hammond with just over 15 seconds remaining to move the final score to 4-1. Akeson finished with two goals and an assist to lead Adirondack. Danis stopped 33 of 34 shots faced to earn the game's first star and his fifth victory for the year.

Record: 23-11-0-3 (49 points)

Standings: The B-Sens still sit one point ahead of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (22-11-1-3, 48 points) for first place in the East Division. Norfolk holds third place in the division with a 20-13-1-4 mark through 38 games played. Hershey is in fourth place with a 17-13-3-3 record good for 40 points which is two ahead of last place Syracuse who holds a 16-14-2-4 record over 36 games.

THIS WEEK...

Wednesday, January 15 @ Adirondack Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers)-7:00p.m.

Binghamton visits Glens Falls for the final meeting of the regular season against the Phantoms. Adirondack holds a one game advantage in the six-game series having won three of the first five games against the Sens. The Phantoms are currently 19-14-0-2 and sit in third place in the Northeast Division.

Right winger Jason Akeson leads the Phantoms with 11 goals and 20 assists over 35 games played this season. Goaltender Cal Heeter has appeared in 24 contests for Adirondack compiling a 13-11-0 record and a 2.08 goals-against average.

Friday, January 17 vs. Bridgeport Sound Tigers (New York Islanders)-7:05p.m.

The B-Sens host the Sound Tigers on Friday for the first and only time this season. Bridgeport has gone 14-20-1-4 over their first 39 games played this year. The Sound Tigers sit in fourth place, seven points behind Adirondack, in the Northeast Division.

Rookie Ryan Strome leads the Sound Tigers offensively. Strome, who is currently on recall in New York, has compiled nine goals and 24 assists in just 23 games played this season. Strome's 33 points, along with Texas' Curtis McKenzie, leads all AHL rookies. Goaltender Kenny Reiter has appeared in net 17 times for the Sound Tigers this year going 7-7-2 with a 2.83 goals-against average.

Saturday, January 18 @ Syracuse Crunch (Tampa Bay Lightning)-7:00p.m.

Binghamton travels to Syracuse Saturday to wrap up their weekend for a 7:00p.m. matchup versus East Division rival the Crunch. The B-Sens have won six of the first seven meetings between the teams this season. Syracuse sits in last place in the East Division with a 16-14-2-4 record.

Vladislav Namestnikov has notched 11 goals and 14 assists over 22 games played to lead the Crunch offensively. Goaltender Cedrick Desjardins has a 5-8-2 record through 18 appearances in net while Kristers Gudlevskis has played in 16 games going 9-5-2.

Binghamton will host Fantasy Football Friday, January 17, versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Fans wearing football jerseys that stop by the B-Sens Executive Office on the third floor the night of the game will receive $5.00 off their ticket (limit one discount per jersey).

Fans can stop by the Sens Ticket Information Table located on the front concourse to try to place their prediction on which teams will make the Super Bowl. Correct entries will receive TWO FREE TICKETS to the February 5 game versus the Portland Pirates.

SENS SNIPPETS...

Left winger Mike Hoffman has climbed to tie for fourth place all-time with Derek Smith for the Binghamton Senators with 142 career points. Hoffman trails only Jason Spezza (171), Josh Hennessy (213) and Denis Hamel (392).

Rookie forward Matt Puempel has recorded seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) over the last eight games. Throughout the season Puempel has 12 goals and 7 assists in 37 games played.

Defenseman Danny New has a goal and three assists since being recalled to the B-Sens on December 14 from the Elmira Jackals.
