Austin Aztex News Release
Austin, Texas (Friday, July 17, 2015) - The Austin Aztex (6-9-3) defeated Arizona United SC (7-9-1) by a score of 4-1 on Friday, July 17th at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in Austin.
With the win, the Aztex secure a big three points in the USL Western Conference playoff race and take their first victory over Arizona, who won the first two matchups earlier in the season. The season series between the two rivals will conclude on Saturday, July 25 in Scottsdale.
Austin controlled the game from wire to wire, pressuring the Arizona back line early and often on their way to a much need 4-1 victory. Brendan King opened the scoring for the Aztex followed by a first half brace by Trevin Caesar. Sainey Touray added the fourth goal for the Aztex in the second half.
The Aztex came out of the gates fast, dominating possession in the early stretches of the game with aggressive, physical attacks. Coach Paul Dalglish looked to create offense from the outset, pushing the ball with fullbacks Mikey Ambrose and Max Gunderson playing high on the field. Brendan King broke open scoring in the 18th minute on a free kick from 25 yards out that curled around the wall and past Arizona keeper Carl Woszczynski into the left corner of the net. King would strike again just three minutes later with an assist, when he split the Arizona defense and tapped a precise pass to Trevin Caesar in the box, who put it in the back corner of the net to put Austin up 2-0.
The onslaught continued in the 41st minute, when Trevin Caesar found himself in a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper off an entry pass from Kris Tyrpak on a fast break. Caesar took the ball to his right, juked past the goalkeeper to expose an open net and hit the ball in for a 3-0 first half lead.
The Aztex defense was seldom tested in the first half, as Arizona finished the first half with just one shot to the Aztex 14. The Austin defense was able to force the Arizona attack wide, limiting their ability to get good looks.
Arizona came into the second half eager to close the gap, with possession swinging back and forth evenly for the beginning stretches of the half. Arizona finally got onto the scoreboard in the 64th minute, when midfielder Danny Garcia found an opening and put a shot past Austin goalkeeper Devin Perales into the left side of the net to bring the score to 3-1.
The momentum wouldn't last long, as the Aztex struck again to put the nail in the coffin in the 82nd minute. A long-range strike from Andres Cuero was deflected by Woszczynski directly to second half substitute Sainey Touray, who was alone in front of the net. Touray took just one touch to fire the game's final goal into the back right corner of the net. The game came to a close at 4-1 Austin, with the home team putting together a complete performance.
The win for Austin featured the opening of the offensive floodgates after a draught that had seen the team score just three goals in their previous five USL matches. They will look to carry the momentum on as they travel to Scottsdale for a rematch with Arizona United SC on July 25th. The team will then travel back to Austin to face Portland Timbers 2 on August 1st.
