Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas (Wednesday, April 1, 2015) - The Austin Aztex (1-1-0) fell 3-0 to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 (1-1-0) on Wednesday night at House Park.
Austin's squad set the tone with 16 overall shots, but were unable to convert. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps FC 2 registered six shots on the night for their three goals. The Aztex tested Vancouver goalkeeper Spencer Richey, forcing him to make four saves. Aztex forwards Sainey Touray and Trevin Caesar led the team with five shots apiece. Midfielder Tony Rocha added three shots to the total tally.
The opening half featured an Aztex team trying to establish possession quickly, trying to fight off the pressure applied by the ¬ËCaps all over the field. Austin's strategy granted results as the Aztex out-shot the Whitecaps FC 2 five to two over the first 45 minutes. The Aztex also had three corner kicks.
However, one of the counter kicks gave the ¬ËCaps the opportunity they were looking for, and countered for the first goal of the game. After successfully defending a corner kick, WFC2 hit a long ball toward forward Caleb Clarke to set him up one-on-one with Aztex goalkeeper Devin Perales. The shot sailed past Perales to set the score at 1-0 though the 12th minute mark.
The Aztex best opportunity in the first half came off the boots of forward Touray, with a dangerous shot that kissed the left post. The Gambian also led the team with two shots during the opening period.
The Aztex did not concede any spaces as the second half began, and applied intense pressure from all fronts. Forwards Caesar and Touray led the attacking efforts, which resulted in 11 total shots in the half. The ¬ËCaps defensive front was able to deflect the Aztex constant offensive efforts, and continued to play the long ball, trying find the Aztex defense off guard. This time, Austin was able to hold them off until in the 77th minute. Guaraci was called for a foul just outside the Aztex penalty area, setting up WFC2 for a dangerous free kick. Vancouver defender Nitti Craig hit a well-executed free kick which found the net to set the score at 2-0. On the 90th minute, Vancouver found an open space in a counter attack to add the third goal and settle the game at 3-0 at the final whistle.
The Aztex will face their first road test of the season when they travel to Tulsa to square off against the Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday, April 4th. Kickoff is set at 7:00 p.m. CDT. The game will be streamed on Youtube Live, while updates will be available via Twitter through @Aztex_Matchcast.
