Axmen Score 12 to Defeat Doughboys, Remain Undefeated

The Kingsport Axmen (8-0) scored 10-plus runs for the fourth time this season in a 12-6 victory over the Johnson City Doughboys (0-8). Kingsport scored one run in the top of the first on a Shea McGahan double that scored Nate Anderson. McGahan went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks

The Kingsport Axmen (8-0) scored 10-plus runs for the fourth time this season in a 12-6 victory over the Johnson City Doughboys (0-8).

Kingsport scored one run in the top of the first on a Shea McGahan double that scored Nate Anderson. McGahan went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks and a run scored. Johnson City tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly.

No runs were scored in the fourth and fifth innings, but the game would soon take a major turn.

The Axmen scored nine runs in the top of the sixth inning on three walks, five hits (four doubles and one single), one stolen base, one passed ball and three wild pitches. The game-winning, and seventh, Axmen run was scored when Shea McGahan reached on a fielder's choice ground ball that scored Nate Anderson.

Although Kingsport had a commanding 10-1 lead, the Doughboys responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth inning to cut the lead to four, but it wouldn't be enough, as they would fail to score in their final three half innings.

The Axmen poured on two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 12-6 lead, which would be the final score.

Tommy Meyer (1-0) was the Axmen's winning pitcher. Meyer pitched five innings, surrendered one walk, one unearned run and threw one strikeout.

Both Jake Perry and Nate Anderson enter tomorrow's series opener against the Bluefield Ridge Runners on seven-game hit streaks.
