Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

ROBSTOWN, TX – A three run 6th inning was the difference as the Coastal Bend Aviators posted a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over the Pensacola Pelicans Saturday night...a Fairgrounds Field crowd of nearly 2,600 saw the Aviators even up the three-game set with Pensacola at one win apiece and halt the team's losing streak at three. The loss ended the Pelicans five game winning streak.

Amazingly, two pitches into the ballgame Pensacola grabbed a 1-0 lead – Andy Wilson doubled off the center field wall to start the contest and scored on a Carlos Mendoza single off Aviators starting pitcher Mike Smith. Coastal Bend plated a pair of runs in their half of the 1st – Marcus Knight singled home Carlos Adolfo and Lou Ferrell scored when Pelicans starting pitcher Trey Stephens issued a bases loaded walk to Mike Guerrero. The Aviators went up 3-1 in the bottom of the 2nd when Adolfo scored from third on Ferrell's double to dead center field.

Pensacola trimmed Coastal Bend's advantage in the 4th inning – with two outs, Josey Shannon doubled and came home on a Mike Rodriguez single to make the score 3-2. The Pelicans pushed across a pair of runs in the 6th – Rafael Alvarez doubled home Mendoza to tie the score, then Joe Espada scored from third on a Shannon sacrifice fly to put Pensacola back in front 4-3. The lead was short-lived, as the Aviators mounted what turned out to be the winning rally in the bottom of the 6th – with runners at the corners and two outs, Carlos Castillo lined a single to right to plate Trey Salinas; Guerrero tried to advance from first to third base on the play, but Shannon's throw got through Rodriguez at third base and bounded away...Guerrero scoring on the error to give Coastal Bend a 5-4 lead. Edwin Maldonado promptly single home Castillo, giving the Aviators a two run cushion. Smith wiggled out of a two-on, no out situation in the 8th (Coastal Bend nearly pulling off a triple play), then with relief help from Augustin Marquetti shut down the Pelicans in the 9th to wrap up the win...the Aviators seventh over the Pelicans in 13 tries this year.

Smith (8-3) tied his season high with 10 strikeouts in winning his fifth straight decision while Marchetti earned his first save of the year...Santos Hernandez (3-3), the fourth of six pitchers used by Pensacola, took the loss. Ferrell finished with a 3-for-4 night at the plate while Maldonado added a pair of hits for the Aviators...the Pelicans 10-hit attack was paced by Mendoza and Shannon, who had tow safeties apiece. Saturday's win improved Coastal Bend's second half record to 7-5 and overall mark to 31-29...Pensacola dropped to 9-4 in the second half and 33-27 for the year. The series rubber match is slated for Sunday with the Aviators sending righthander Jose Luis Lopez (6-3) to the mound; Pensacola will counter with righty Byron Batson (3-2).
