San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - On August 8 and 9, 2015, the four best pro Ultimate teams in North America will come together at Avaya Stadium to compete in the American Ultimate Disc League's fourth annual Ultimate Championships.
The American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) is the first and largest professional Ultimate league in the world, with 25 teams throughout Canada and the United States. The Ultimate Championships is the culmination of 182 league games, with the best teams from each division coming to Avaya to compete in a final four-styled playoff. Two semi-final games will be played on Saturday, August 8 and a final game on Sunday August 9, which will all be streamed live on ESPN3.
"The AUDL is ecstatic for the opportunity to bring our Championship Weekend to the Bay Area and Avaya Stadium," said AUDL Commissioner Steve Gordon. "We think that the Quakes' new home is one of the most unique venues in all of sports and the perfect place for us to showcase this exhilarating sport at its highest level."
The weekend will make full use of the beautiful new Avaya Stadium, home to Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes, by creating an affordable, family friendly festival-like atmosphere, where kids can get disc throwing tips from the pros, test their skills in a target challenge area, and mingle with some of the best Ultimate players in the world.
"One of the unique tenets of Ultimate is an ethical code called Spirit of the Game, where sportsmanship, integrity and community trump winning at any cost," added Gordon. "The spirit of Ultimate extends through the game day experience at our AUDL events. Our athletes are some of the most accessible in all of pro sports - all AUDL games end with the players engaging and throwing discs with the fans. Our goal is to create one of the most affordable, inclusive and exciting sports experiences."
The sport of Ultimate has exploded in growth in recent years. With participation rates in the U.S. at over 5 million and one of the fastest growing sports worldwide, the AUDL was established in 2012 to showcase Ultimate's best athletes.
Tickets for the Ultimate Championships go on sale soon.
