Austin Bruins News Release

Since Thanksgiving, the Austin Bruins (25-9-11) have quietly been one of the hottest teams in the NAHL. Much of that can be contributed to the team s surprising play away from home. The Bruins are 15-2-4 since Turkey Day and 9-0-1 on the road during that span.

Friday in the Twin Cities, Austin blanked the Minnesota Magicians (15-28-1) 6-0 at Richfield Arena to improve to 11-0 all-time and 7-0 this season against their nearby rivals.

The Bruins picked up where they left off last Saturday in an 8-1 win in Richfield. On its first shot of the game, Austin found the back of the net while short-handed when Liam Feeney (Foxboro, MA) blasted a rolling puck through the five-hole of Minnesota starter Cole Weaver (Champlin, MN).

The second Bruins shot also went in when captain Brian Bachnak (Riverview, MI) tipped in a point shot from Ian Scheid (Coon Rapids, MN) at 3:18 of the period. The Magicians quickly pulled Weaver for Vaughan Ahrens (Plymouth, MN) and Ahrens stopped all six shots he faced the rest of the frame as the Bruins led 2-0.

Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany) tapped in a terrific pass from Bachnak to add to the lead early in the second period, and Minnesota struggled to contain its frustration the rest of the frame. After Alex Pettersson (Ockero, Sweden) absorbed a high it in open-ice, drawing a penalty, he scored on a deflection on the ensuing power play. In the final minute of the period, JC Maclean was tripped up and following Pettersson s lead, he scored on the ensuing man-advantage to make it 5-0 Bruins after two.

Early in the third, Jade Miller (Minto, ND) tallied the final Austin goal on a superb individual effort. Miller followed his own shot, split two defenders and pulled the rebound to his forehand with limited space, before sliding the puck behind Ahrens.

Evan Smith (Parker, CO) made several huge stops throughout the contest, in preserving a 24-save shutout for his sixth win of the season.

The Bruins and Magicians will play one final time Saturday to complete the season series. It will be the fifth annual Paint the Rink Pink event to raise money for Breast Cancer Research, with game time schedule for 7:05pm at Riverside Arena in Austin. The game is expected to sell out again, and will also be broadcasted on fasthockey.com and 1480AM KAUS in Austin, with coverage starting at 6:50.
