Augusta's Win Streak Snapped by Crawdads

Hickory, NC - The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 8-3) had its six game win streak snapped by the Hickory Crawdads (30-40, 4-7) Sunday with a 6-4 loss. Ryan Paul suffered the loss in relief allowing three runs in the eighth inning after Augusta rallied back to take a lead in the seventh inning.

The GreenJackets took a 4-3 lead into the eighth inning but Hickory plated three runs to reclaim the lead. Austin McClune led off the inning with a single then scored when Matt Hague followed with a two-run homer to left field. Danny Bomback provided some insurance with a two-out RBI single.

Paul (1-2) suffered his first blown save of the season allowing three runs on four hits in two innings of work.

Augusta trailed 3-0 entering the seventh inning but plated four runs for a 4-3 lead. Augusta began the inning with four consecutive singles including an RBI infield hit from Nestor Rojas that plated Augusta's first run of the game. Rojas dove head first into the first base bag for his infield single.

Francisco Peguero then drove in a run on an RBI ground out to make it 3-2 Hickory. Shane Jordan followed with a two-out walk then Nick Noonan came through with a two-run single to give the GreenJackets the lead.

Hickory took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI double from Erik Huber.

Starter Waldis Joaquin received the no-decision allowing one run on three hits over three innings.

Hickory got two more runs in the fifth inning off reliever Dan Turpen on back-to-back RBI singles from Greg Picart and Albert Laboy.

The GreenJackets continue their series against Hickory Monday night with Augusta sending right-hander Chance Corgan (0-2, 3.65) to the mound for the third game of the series. Hickory will counter with right-hander Duke Welker (1-4, 4.59). First pitch is at 5:05 p.m.

Game Notes:

The GreenJackets fell to 40-3 when leading after seven innings this season.

Both teams waited out a 55 minute rain delay to start the third inning. Joaquin came back out to pitch the third inning and allowed one hit.

Andrew Davis finished 3-for-4 in the game.

Angel Villalona was 2-for-4.
